2018 Middle School Summit                                             March 8, 2018 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm                                      Santa Clara Office of Education, San Jose Room

Project Cornerstone’s Middle School Summit will be an introductory discussion with a focus on building supportive communities for LGBTQ youth. We will listen to a panel of youth and adults and also look at LGBTQ youth’s 2017 Developmental Assets Survey results. Conversations around our panelists’ experiences and expertise will help us explore ways to bring this work home to schools and communities to provide support, build an inclusive, caring climate, and empower all youth.

Project Cornerstone Program Impact (2016-17)

During the 2016-17 school year, Project Cornerstone was active in 215 schools in 32 school districts:

  • Training more than 3,492 parent volunteers to deliver programs that reached 76,568 students.
  • Facilitating Expect Respect leadership and bullying prevention workshops for 1,802 students in 55 schools.
  • Training over 1,005 teachers in forging stronger connections with their students and creating a caring and supportive school climate.
  • Engaging 513 adults through the six week Take It Personally (TIP) workshops.

Our volunteers and students shared with us the following:

  • 91% of youth said that they had at least one caring adult at school they trust if they have a problem.
  • 98% of youth shared that they are more likely to speak up against bullying.
  • 95% of adult volunteers are making greater efforts to support youth in their community.
  • 99% of school staff reported that they are taking time to intentionally build relationships with their students.

2017 Developmental Asset Survey Result Highlights

In Fall 2016, YMCA Project Cornerstone facilitated an on-line survey to over 43,000 students in more than 180 schools and 25 districts throughout Santa Clara County. The survey measures 40 developmental assets—the positive values, relationships, and experiences that youth need to thrive. The survey also measures risk behaviors and thriving indicators, and correlates them with the presence or absence of developmental assets. Research proves that the more assets youth possess, the more likely they are to choose healthy activities, succeed in school, and avoid risk behaviors. Conversely, youth with fewer assets are more likely to engage in risk behaviors and are less successful at school.
