Volunteer Opportunities

The following volunteer opportunities are available at Project Cornerstone. For more information about these volunteer opportunities, email info@projectcornerstone.org or call (408) 351-6482.

School-Based Volunteers
To volunteer in a Project Cornerstone program at a school, please contact the school's office to find out which Project Cornerstone programs are active at your school. If there are no active Project Cornerstone programs at your school, please email us at info@projectcornerstone.org or call us at (408) 351-6482 for information about how to get a program started. The following programs are available:

Asset Building Champions (ABC) Volunteer
ABC volunteers read specially selected books and lead discussions in the school classroom that are designed to create a common language and vocabulary about student respect for the entire school. The stories and activities focus on issues like building friendship skills, increasing student-to-student respect, how to avoid bullies, and what to do if a bully is targeting others. Students also learn about values such as honesty, caring, responsibility, and friendship. Each month, ABC volunteers meet as a group to review the book and lesson plan for the upcoming month. Then, the volunteers read the book and lead the planned activity and discussions in their assigned classroom. All ABC volunteers must complete either a Take It Personally or an Assets 101 training course.

To become an ABC program volunteer, contact your school's office to determine whether the ABC program is active at your site. If the program is active, please contact the ABC site coordinator at your school for more information. If the program is not active, please email us at info@projectcornerstone.org or call us at (408) 351-6482 for information about how to get a program started.

Los Dichos Volunteer
Los Dichos de la Casa (Los Dichos) is a Spanish-language program that opens new doors for Spanish-speaking parents to support not only their children's education and development but that of all children in their community.  Each month, Los Dichos volunteers read specially selected bilingual books in the classroom and lead activities and discussions about topics including Latino heritage, tolerance, family pride, peaceful conflict resolution and other important values. Students develop a sense of positive cultural identity and overall a greater sense of cultural competence and respect for one another.

Los Dichos volunteers must take an introductory course in developmental assets (provided by Project Cornerstone staff in Spanish or English) and attend monthly meetings to discuss lesson plans. To become a volunteer, contact your school's office to determine whether Los Dichos is active at your site. If the program is active, please contact the Los Dichos site coordinator at your school for more information. If the program is not active, please email us at info@projectcornerstone.org or call us at (408) 351-6482 for information about how to get a program started.

Middle School Club Facilitator
Middle School Club facilitators hold monthly lunchtime or after-school meetings where they engage with students and hold thought-provoking discussions about books or other subjects.  The program helps young people develop a love of reading and form bonds with their peers as well as caring adults. For more information, please email us at info@projectcornerstone.org or call us at (408) 351-6482.

Community Volunteers
Take It Personally (TIP) Facilitator
The Take It Personally (TIP) facilitator leads adult study groups in which participants learn about the eight developmental asset categories and develop new skills to more intentionally and effective support young people. To become a facilitator, participants must attend the six-week study group and complete a two-hour training with Project Cornerstone staff. TIP facilitators lead workshops at their organization or at Project Cornerstone’s request.

For more information, please email us at info@projectcornerstone.org or call us at (408) 351-6482 for information about how to get a program started.
