May, 2007

Contact: Lori Maitski

ABC Meetings: May 3 and 4
The May ABC meetings will be held Thursday, May 3, and Friday, May 4 at the United Way (1922 The Alameda, San Jose, 95126). Parking is in the back of the building off McKendrie – the sign says “United Way Parking.” Spots are limited, so carpool if possible. We can also use the overflow lot behind the United Way parking area if necessary.

  • Year Three Schools: 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM on Thursday, May 3
  • Year Two Schools: 10:30 AM to noon on Thursday, May 3
  • Year One Schools: 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM on Friday, May 4

This will be our last meeting, so please try to attend or have a representative attend from your school. We will be discussing the May books, attendance at the volunteer celebration, evaluations, and next year’s placement.

  • Remember, the criteria to move to the next level is to have completed the current year school-wide and to have read five books by June.
  • Don’t forget your student, teacher, and parent evaluations!

Volunteer Celebration: Friday, May 11th at Kelley Park

All current and past Project Cornerstone volunteers are invited to celebrate this years volunteer’s at the Kelley Park Amphitheater. Our speaker will be Colleen Wilcox, Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools. Please come for some delicious food, special awards, fun prizes, and great company! Parking may be crowded and will cost $6 per car. Carpooling with other volunteers would be a good idea.

If you are an ABC parent, please RSVP to your Lead Parent at your school site. If you are a TABP facilitator or general volunteer, please RSVP to Lori Maitski by Friday, May 4 at (408) 351-6457 or lmaitski@scvymca.org.

Stressed-Out Students Conference: May 11, 7:30 to 9:30 PM

This free conference for parents of preteens (9 to 13) or teens (14 to 18) brings the community together to address and counter problems associated with academic stress. Speakers will be Dr. Madeline Levine, author of The Price of Privilege, and Dr. Wendy Mogel, author of The Blessing of a Skinned Knee. For more information and to register, visit http://sosconference.stanford.edu. The conference will be held at Stanford University’s Kresge Auditorium.
