Getting Involved |
The following is a list of volunteer opportunities at Project Cornerstone. For more information about these volunteer opportunities, email info@projectcornerstone.org or call (408) 351-6482.
School-Based Volunteers
To volunteer in a Project Cornerstone program at a school, please contact the school's office to find out which Project Cornerstone programs are active at your school. If there are no active Project Cornerstone programs at your school, please email us at info@projectcornerstone.org or call us at (408) 351-6482 for information about how to get a program started. The following programs are available:
Asset Building Champions (ABC) Volunteer
ABC volunteers read stories and lead discussions in the school classroom that are designed to increase the number of developmental assets in all students and adults. The stories and activities focus on issues like student-to-student respect, how to avoid bullies, and what to do if a bully is victimizing others. Students also learn about values such as honesty, caring, responsibility, and friendship. By sharing these concepts in class, volunteers help create a common language and vocabulary about student respect for the entire school. Each month, ABC volunteers meet as a group to review the book and lesson plan for the upcoming month. Then, the volunteers read the book and lead the planned activity and discussions in their assigned classroom. All ABC volunteers must complete either a Taking Asset Building Personally (TABP) or an Assets 101 training course.
To become an ABC program volunteer, contact your school's office to determine whether the ABC program is active at your site. If the program is active, please contact the ABC site coordinator at your school for more information. If the program is not active, please email us at info@projectcornerstone.org or call us at (408) 351-6482 for information about how to get a program started.
Cultural Heritage Asset Programs (CHAPs) Volunteer
Project Cornerstone's Cultural Heritage Asset Programs, which are similar to the ABC program, trains adult volunteers to read specially selected books and lead activities and discussions related to their cultural heritage in the classroom. The largest of these programs is Los Dichos de la Casa (Los Dichos), a Spanish-language program that opens new doors for Spanish-speaking parents to support not only their children's education and development but that of all children in their community. Other programs are available to support Chinese, Indian, Korean, and Vietnamese cultures. All programs help build positive cultural identity in children who are of the culture supported in the program, and build cultural competence for students from other backgrounds.
Volunteers must take an introductory course in developmental assets (provided by Project Cornerstone staff) and attend monthly meetings to discuss lesson plans. To volunteer, contact your school's office to determine whether a program is active at your site. If Los Dichos or another CHAPs program is available, please contact the site coordinator at your school for more information. If the program you are interested in is not active, please email us at info@projectcornerstone.org or call us at (408) 351-6482 for information about how to get a program started.
Middle School Book Club Facilitator
Middle School book club facilitators hold monthly lunchtime or after-school meetings where they engage with students and hold thought-provoking discussions about books. (Suggested book lists are provided by Project Cornerstone.) The program helps young people develop a love of reading and form bonds with their peers as well as caring adults.
