Developmental Assets: 2004 Survey Results

In October 2004, nearly 14,000 4th - 12th grade students in 95 schools were surveyed regarding their experiences growing up in Santa Clara county.  The results provide us with a report card of how we, as a community, support the healthy development of our children and youth.

Some highlights include:

  • The average number of assets for middle and high school students is 18.8, while elementary aged students have an average of 26.8  assets.
  • Only 18% of middle and high schoolers and 35% of elementary aged students felt that the community values children and youth.
  • Only 26% of middle and high schoolers felt that they had opportunities for useful roles in the community.  This is a drop from 55% of elementary students.
  • Only 26% of middle and high schoolers and 56% of elementary aged students had positive adult roel models.
  • In contrast, 68% of middle and high schoolers and 88% of elementary aged students felt that their peers were positive influences.
