About Project Cornerstone: Our History

Key dates in Project Cornerstone’s growth:

1998 - Three of the first to join Cornerstone’s Leadership Team were the Chair Susan Hammer, former Mayor of San Jose, and County Supervisor Blanca Alvarado and County Superintendent of Schools Colleen Wilcox.

1999 - Cornerstone partnered with nine school districts and the County Office of Education to conducted Search Institute’s survey of attitudes and behaviors of 7,000 7-12 graders throughout the county.

2000 - Project Cornerstone was launched with the presentation of the survey results as a powerful call to action to build assets in all our young people.

2005 - Project Cornerstone surveyed 15,000 students in grades 4 through 11 throughout the county.

Today our collaborative works withmore than organizations including community-based youth and family serving organizations, city and county offices and agencies, businesses and corporations, foundations and community groups, and over 130 schools and the County Office of Education.
